Or, you could just call us.

Environment-Friendly Electronics Recycling

The Environmental Protection Agency considers TV sets to be e-waste, meaning you can’t dump them in the regular garbage.

Dumping old or unwanted televisions can cause environmental damage. Like so many other electronic components, they have earth minerals and toxic contaminants found in them, including cell phones and computers.

Televisions contain many materials that are harmful to human health. They are also bulky and difficult to move, unlike other electronic items. It doesn’t encourage householders to do the right thing with their old set.

Recycling TVs is a challenge. It requires dismantling the set and separating the different materials for re-use or safe disposal.

Looking for a less time-consuming way to recycle or donate your unused or broken? Call Nixxit for the hands-off option. We’ll pick up your television and donate or recycle it for you.

The Importance of Recycling

Televisions don’t have an apparent new purpose, like an old car tire that you can re-use around the home. All you can do is donate, reuse, or recycle.

You can re-use it by giving an old but working TV to a friend or family member or giving it to charity. However, that’s only an option if the set is still working.

Even sets in perfect working order can still be unwanted if they don’t have the latest tech or features. Think about how often you upgrade your cell phones, but this is recycling on a much grander and more challenging scale.

Recycling has become essential to avoid drowning landfill sites with these bulky and hazardous items.

Televisions with cathode ray tubes (CRT) contain up to 8 pounds of lead, plus cadmium-based phosphorous and other dangerous heavy metals.

Dumping CRT sets in the landfill releases lead and other materials into the air. These televisions are dangerous and complex to recycle.

Older models with LCD lights may have as many as 20 tubes filled with mercury. It means delicate work to take the screens apart without breaking the tubes.

Other materials found in televisions include plastic, wood from large console televisions, copper wiring, and circuit boards.

There are a lot of recycling possibilities for all the different components. Still, it is specialist work and can be dangerous if not done correctly, so never consider breaking up an old TV set yourself.

Rules for Television Removal & Pick Up

Many states in the US now have legislation for the disposal of electronic waste, including computers, cell phones, televisions, and anything with electronic components.

Legislation in CA also affects recycling labels on consumer electronic products. When sold new, the packaging can indicate whether to properly dispose of or handle the product at the end of its life through the designated state programs.

California has tackled the issue of electronic waste head-on with the Electronic Waste Recycling Act. It requires that e-waste be disposed of properly.

For the householder, this means that you cannot put unwanted and broken televisions out with the regular garbage, including leaving them in a dumpster. A general recycling service also won’t collect a TV set.

With so many restrictions, the best option is to call Nixxit for easy TV removal and recycling in the Bay Area.
