How To Take Apart a Pool Table for Removal

How To Take Apart a Pool Table for Removal 1

Whether you’re selling, donating, or disposing of it, dismantling your pool table ahead of its collection might be daunting. We understand why; it’s a big table with an intimidating collection of tunnels running through the middle of it.

Luckily for you, we’re here to help at Nixxit. In the following guide, we’ll go through everything you need to know about taking apart your pool table for removal. This includes the prep, the tools you’ll need, and an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide.

Things To Consider Before Disassembling a Pool Table

It’s important to note that dismantling a pool table before getting rid of it is not an easy or quick job. It needs dedicated time and effort. That’s to say, it’s best not to attempt this spontaneously. Gather your tools and get your fellow pool tournament friends to help – trust us, it’ll make a world of difference.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Wear protective glasses
  • Have a friend on hand to help with heavy lifting
  • Ensure you have small bags nearby to store the small parts, e.g., bolts

How To Take Apart a Pool Table in Six Simple Steps

1. Gather Your Tools

As with all projects, don’t start until your tools are ready. This will save you time and avoid putting you in a position where you might have to abandon the project to go and locate (or even buy) a tool you are missing.

That being said, you require fewer tools than you might expect for a project this big. Hopefully, you’ll already have everything you need in your toolbox, but here’s a helpful list:

  • A flat-head screwdriver (or a pair of needle nose pliers)
  • A drill with a screwdriver bit
  • A wrench

2. Remove the Staples Securing the Pockets

The next job is to remove the staples securing the pockets, and for this one, you’ll need to lie on your back. That’s because you need to get under the table and look up to the backside of the pockets. For this task, it’s really important that you have on your protective eyewear to ensure no staples fall into your eyes.

To remove the staples, use your screwdriver or the pliers.

3. Take Off the Rail Bolts

Grab your wrench and get working on the side rail bolts. It’s probably the case that there are three bolts per section, so move methodically around the table and unscrew each one. Be sure to check whether your pool table’s side rails are in one piece or multiple. The answer will determine how often you’ll need to catch the rail.

Be careful when it comes to the final bolt of each section, as you don’t want it to slip off the table. Carefully remove it and move on to the next one.

4. Remove the Felt

You might think this will be the quickest step, but you’d be wrong. Removing the felt requires time and patience because of the way it is likely secured to the rest of the table. This is especially true if you’re planning on reassembling it later down the line. If you’re disposing of the table, you can be less careful.

The felt will be secured to the table piece below either with staples or glue, so the first step is to figure out which one it is. After that, slowly and carefully remove it.

5. Take Apart the Slate

This is where your friends come in. The slate bed of a pool table can be incredibly heavy, and removing it alone isn’t recommended. Even if your slate bed is comprised of several smaller pieces, each piece will be heavy.

Once you’ve got your handy helpers, remove the screws with the drill and then carefully lift the slate bed off the remainder of the table. There will usually be one screw in each corner of the slate bed (or each piece of the slate bed if it’s separated).

6. Disassemble the Legs

You’ll be pleased to know that the last step is the easiest. Removing the legs of the pool table should be quick and straightforward. Usually, it’s just a case of unscrewing them from the body. At worst, you might find a few nuts.

Once you’re done with the legs, you’ll have the chance to sit down with your friends who helped you and discuss your next tournament – or even debate the next Pro Nationals. No matter how you spend your time, you’ll be safe knowing you successfully dismantled your pool table.

Moving a Pool Table Yourself vs. Hiring a Professional

With all that said, taking apart a pool table yourself is a time-consuming and laborious task. Not only does it take up your own time, but it’ll also require other people’s time to come and help you.

We have the perfect solution if you’re not sure you want to commit to that. At Nixxit Junk Removals, we have an entire service dedicated to the removal of pool tables in the Bay Area – and it’s hassle-free for you. Sound like something you’d be interested in? Get in touch today!
