Company Overview
I’m Sarah, the founder of Nixxit. I’ve been in the junk removal industry for over six years now. Most days, I’m behind the scenes keeping everything organized, scheduling, operations, and enhancing customer experience. I’ve always been someone who likes to build things. I actually started my first small business while I was at UC Davis, and before Nixxit, I worked in corporate marketing. That mix of hands-on work and strategy is really what shaped how we run the company today.
We’re a crew of about 12 people total, including my partner Bryce and partial owner David. They have also been in this industry for over 15 years now.
Our truck team members aren’t just random hires; many of them we’ve known for years. Everyone is trained, background checked, and genuinely cares about doing a good job. When someone invites us onto their property for a garage cleanout, estate cleanout, or furniture removal in the Bay Area, that trust matters.
And then there are Zero and Kokomo. They are our rescue dogs and the real bosses around here. They’re our office mascots and a big reminder of why we care so much about community. When I’m not working, I’m usually hiking Bay Area trails with them. That local connection is a huge part of who we are.
Questions And Answers
Q: What makes junk removal in the Bay Area unique compared to other markets, and how has Nixxit adapted to serve this community?
A: The Bay Area is not your average market. We deal with tight driveways, steep hills, HOA rules, very strict recycling laws, and so much more. Dumping something isn’t as simple as “just take it to the landfill.” There are mattress recycling laws, e-waste rules, and disposal fees that change by county. Because we work across Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, and San Francisco regularly, we understand how each area works. We’ve built strong local donation and recycling relationships so we can handle things the right way.
Q: When a homeowner is facing a massive garage cleanout or an estate clearing, what are the first three steps you recommend they take before your team arrives?
A: First, pull out anything important, like documents, photos, family keepsakes, or anything sentimental. It’s always easier to set those aside before we start moving quickly.
Second, decide if you plan to do an estate sale or a garage sale. That’s important because it can change the scope of work. If you’re selling items first, we usually recommend scheduling us after the sale so we can remove what’s left. It saves you money and keeps the process cleaner and more organized.
Third, don’t overthink it. We handle garage cleanouts and estate cleanouts across the Bay Area every week. When we come out for an estimate, we’re prepared to assess the space, ask the right questions, and help you think through the timeline. The more we know upfront, the smoother the job goes.
Q: Furniture removal is one of your most requested services. What are the biggest challenges people face when trying to dispose of old couches or mattresses in the San Francisco Bay Area on their own?
A: Couches are heavy. Sectionals barely fit through doors. Mattresses can’t just be tossed because of recycling rules in California. And transfer stations charge fees that surprise people.
A lot of homeowners start out thinking they’ll handle it themselves until they realize moving a 300-pound couch downstairs isn’t so simple. We get calls all the time from people who tried to DIY it and gave up halfway through.
Another common issue is donation. People call around hoping a charity will pick up, only to find most places are very selective about what they’ll take, and most don’t actually do pick-ups, let alone come inside the home to remove items. That’s where we step in. We go into the home, do the heavy lifting, navigate tight hallways and stairs, and handle the proper donation or disposal from start to finish.
Q: As a woman-owned junk removal company, what’s been your experience in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
A: It’s been empowering. Junk removal is definitely male-dominated, but I think that’s part of what makes us stand out. Clients often tell us they appreciate the clear communication and organized approach we bring. Being a woman-owned junk removal company in the Bay Area has helped us build trust in a different way.
Q: Nixxit is a Certified Women-Owned Small Business. How does being a locally-owned, non-franchise company change the level of service a client gets compared to a national 1-800 brand?
A: When you call Nixxit, you’re talking to us, not a call center. We live and work here in the Bay Area. We know the neighborhoods, the tight streets, the parking headaches, and the local disposal rules. Being locally owned means we can make decisions quickly and tailor our service to each job. You’re not just another invoice number in a national system.
With large franchise-style junk removal companies, there’s often higher employee turnover. Crews can change frequently, and the person showing up may not have years of experience or long-term training with the company. Our team is different. Many of our crew members have been with us for years. They’re trained, background checked, and aligned with how we do things. That consistency shows in the level of care we bring into someone’s home.
It’s also worth remembering that many national brands aren’t actually local businesses. Some are headquartered out of state or even out of the country. They operate with large corporate overhead, national advertising campaigns, major marketing budgets, and layered management structures. Ultimately, those costs have to be covered somewhere, and that often shows up in higher pricing for the customer.
As a locally owned, woman-owned junk removal company in the Bay Area, we keep our operation lean and focused on service.
Q: From Castro Valley to Oakland and San Ramon, you cover a lot of ground. How do you manage logistics to ensure the “punctuality” your reviews often mention?
A: We’re big on planning. Every call gets notes. Every job gets scheduled with traffic and location in mind. Because we focus on specific Bay Area zones each day and have multiple crews running, we’re not zig-zagging across counties randomly. That’s why so many of our Google reviews mention that we show up when we say we will.
Q: E-waste and appliance removal require special handling. What should Bay Area businesses know about the legal and environmental requirements for disposing of old office tech?
A: California has strict rules about electronics. You can’t throw monitors, printers, or appliances into a dumpster. Businesses in the Bay Area need to work with a company that understands proper e-waste disposal. We handle office cleanouts and appliance removal while following local recycling requirements, so companies don’t have to worry about fines or improper disposal.
Q: Many customers are hesitant about pricing. How does Nixxit’s upfront, “no-hidden-fee” estimate process work, and why is on-site quoting more accurate than a phone estimate?
A: We price based on how much space your items take up in our truck. It’s a simple, volume-based system, so you’re only paying for what we actually remove.
For larger jobs like hoarder cleanouts or estate cleanouts, we prefer to see everything in person. Photos and phone calls can miss important details like access issues, hidden items, tight staircases, or the true weight of materials. Pictures, especially, can be tricky; sometimes a pile looks much bigger in a photo than it is in person, and sometimes it looks smaller than the actual volume.
If it’s just a couple of items, photos can absolutely work. But for bigger jobs, an on-site estimate allows us to assess the space properly, ask the right questions, and give you the most accurate price upfront. Our goals are simple: No hidden fees and no surprises.
Q: Hoarding situations and estate cleanouts can be emotionally charged. How does your team approach these sensitive jobs differently from a standard curbside pickup?
A: These jobs aren’t just “junk.” They’re often tied to life changes like loss, transitions, family dynamics, or feeling overwhelmed. We understand that walking into a hoarding situation or handling an estate cleanout can be emotional.
We move more slowly when needed. We double-check items before removing them. We communicate clearly and make sure everyone feels comfortable with what’s happening.
Between our leadership team and crew, we have over a decade of experience handling these types of projects and have completed hundreds of hoarder cleanouts and estate cleanouts across the Bay Area, including some of the most severe cases. That experience matters. It allows us to stay calm, organized, and respectful, no matter the condition of the property.
Q: What are the most common items you see being “rehomed” through your donation partners?
A: Dressers, dining tables, bookshelves, clothing, kitchenware, and gently used furniture are common donation items. We always try to donate first when possible. Being an eco-friendly junk removal company in the Bay Area means reducing landfill waste whenever we can.
Q: You work with real estate agents and property managers on property cleanouts. What does that process look like when a home needs to be cleared quickly for listing?
A: Speed matters in real estate. When agents call us for a property cleanout, we move fast. We can schedule quickly, provide clear pricing, and clear a home so it’s ready for staging or listing. Communication is key.
Q: Construction debris removal is a heavy-duty task. What types of materials (drywall, wood, metal) can Nixxit handle, and what are the limitations?
A: We handle drywall, lumber, fencing, tile, flooring, and general renovation debris. We do not handle hazardous materials like asbestos or chemicals. For Bay Area remodeling projects, having a reliable construction debris removal company keeps the site clean and on schedule.
Q: Looking toward the future of the Bay Area Green Business program, what is Nixxit doing to push the industry toward a “circular economy” model?
A: We focus on donating usable items, recycling properly, and educating customers about responsible disposal. The Bay Area cares about sustainability, and so do we. We want junk removal to be more than hauling; we want it to be about reducing waste and giving items a second life when possible.
Q: Foreclosure cleanouts and rental turnovers often have tight timelines. What’s the fastest you’ve cleared a property, and what made it possible?
A: We’ve cleared full properties in a few hours or one to two days, depending on size and crew. It comes down to planning, having the right team, and clear communication. In rental turnovers and foreclosure cleanouts across the Bay Area, timing protects property value, and we understand that.
